Madhya Pradesh

At the geographical heart of India lies a state of ancient temples, holy rivers, medieval fort-cities, and living heritage that few travellers fully explore. This journey follows the sacred Narmada River from the Jyotirlinga shrine of Mahakal in Ujjain to the temple-island of Omkareshwar, the serene riverside town of Maheshwar — known for its handloom silks — and finally the hauntingly beautiful medieval ruins of Mandu, before ending in the city of Indore.

With Orchid Vacations, this off-beaten-path journey through the heart of India is made comfortable and memorable — thoughtfully paced, with time for both darshan and discovery.

Mahakal — The Jyotirlinga of Time

The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred Shiva shrines in India. The evening Bhasma Aarti, performed with sacred ash, is a deeply moving spiritual experience unlike anything else.

🛕

Omkareshwar — Island Temple

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the Omkareshwar Temple sits on a natural island in the Narmada River shaped like the sacred symbol "Om." A boat ride to the island is one of the most serene moments in Madhya Pradesh travel.

🌊

Maheshwar on the Narmada

The riverside town of Maheshwar is home to the Ahilya Fort, the Royal Ghat, and the famous Maheshwari handloom sarees — hand-woven silk fabrics that are among the finest in India. Watch weavers at work in the ancient town.

🏰

Mandu — City of Joy

The ruined medieval city of Mandu sits atop a plateau 2,000 feet above the Narmada valley — a romantic ghost-city of Afghan-style palaces, ship-shaped Jahaz Mahal, and the love story of Baz Bahadur and Roopmati.

Then begin a circuit of Ujjain's sacred sites: the revered Harsidhi Temple, Bada Ganesh, Kaal Bhairav Temple, the peaceful Ram Ghat on the Shipra, Mangalnath Temple, and the Sandeepani Ashram — where Lord Krishna received his education. In the evening, the centrepiece of the journey: a visit to the Mahakaleshwar Temple — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the most powerful Shiva shrine in India — and a walk along the magnificent Mahakal Lok Corridor, adorned with 108 sculpted pillars and the stories of Shiva's 11 avatars.

Seek blessings at both temples and take in the river views. Later, proceed to Maheshwar on the banks of the Narmada. In the evening, attend the serene Narmada River Aarti at the Royal Ghat — a beautiful ritual of lamps and flowers on the sacred river. Night stay at Maheshwar.
